Col. Daniel Rand, son of Solomon and Deborah (Dodge) Rand, grandson of Daniel was born in Shrewsbury, MA October 15, 1742. Daniel married May 21, 1767 Susannah Hemmenway of Shrewsbury. She was the daughter of Daniel and Ruth (Bigelow) Hemmenway. She was born April 16 1746 and was the cousin of Abigail Bigelow, the second wife of John Perry of Rindge.
Daniel and Susannah settled in Rindge, NH and there resided until their deaths and were buried on the family homestead. Daniel was the brother of Ezekiel and Solomon Rand who also settled in Rindge. Solomon and Ezekiel were both soldiers in the Revolution. A fourth brother Artemas was in Rindge a short time but never became a permanent resident. Artemas died in the Revolutionary army.
Daniel and Susannah were the parents of 12 children. They raised their family on their farm in the south part of Rindge near what is today the corner of Rand and Robbins Roads. There is a photograph of the house taken circa late 1800s in its abandoned condition. The only sign left today are the graves of Susannah and Daniel surrounded by a waist high stone wall.
In the Revolution Daniel was an ensign in Capt. Hale’s Lexington company in 1775. He was a signatory of the “Association Test” in Rindge and a lieutenant in Col. Isaac Wyman’s regiment in 1776. In 1777 he was a Capt in Col. Moore’s regiment and led a company that included 24 Rindge men at the Battle of Saratoga. He was several years a member of the committee of safety. In the militia he was a Major in 1782 and a Colonel in 1785.
Colonel Rand represented the town of Rindge in the New Hampshire legislature for ten years. He was elected to the board of selectmen in Rindge seven times.
