This month, we’re excited to present Rik Ekström as our feature performer.
Rik Ekström is a singer-songwriter and band leader from Fitzwilliam, NH, by way of New York City. Rik’s music draws on American and European folk traditions heavily seasoned with rock and roll chugga-chugga. As a lyricist, Rik Ekström builds stories around loving-yet-strained relationships, happy misunderstandings, and absurd propositions. Songs like A Dog With A Problem, Pleasure Pleasing Pleasant Please, and Noah’s Dart, depict
family adventures and the end of times with equal parts whimsy and heartbreak.
Throughout the 1990s, Rik was a busy member of New York City’s music scene, first as a member of the roots boogie band, Venus for Breakfast, and then as the leader of his own band, Boneshaker. Both VfB and Boneshaker performed regularly throughout the 90’s and early 00’s, including innumerable club dates, festivals, Folk Alliance showcases, live radio, and small theaters. On Rik’s 1999 album, The Philosophy of Brown, he is backed by a group of seasoned players, including Paul Warren Jacobs, Marz Marlow, and Jeff “Mugs” Ross – all alumni of Colorado’s blues club and festival scene.
Rik’s current band, FairOak, has been entertaining Monadnock region audiences since 2023. The band will be releasing an EP in the late spring of 2025 called, The House of What’s Happening. Rik’s record with the band Boneshaker, The Philosophy of Brown, is currently available on Spotify and Apple Music.
Music at the Museum is a three-season open mic that occurs at 1:00 pm on the last Saturday of each month, typically from March through October of each year. Weather permitting, the open mic is held outdoors at the Museum from May through September, and unless otherwise indicated, at the Rindge Meeting House in March, April, and October. In the case of rain (or worse), we move indoors to the Rindge Meeting House.
